pies -

I'm making the pies today, for the big feast.

I am roasting pumpkins grown in our garden. I'm also making my own mincemeat, without suet or meat -- but with apples from the local orchard, raisins and spices. I usually buy the jarred mincemeat and then add more fresh apples and plump raisins, but this year I didn't shop early in the week and now the roads are icy - and I just don't want to go out.

I'm working some this morning, then I'll make a fire, put some nice music on, and start getting the ingredients ready. Grace wants to help make the pies later today when she gets home. Hope the roads are good by then!

Goal: 3 pumpkin pies and 1 mincemeat cooling on the counter by 9pm tonight.

Farm Blog

We're growing food and cooking it like maybe your grandparents used to do. A little pinch of this and a pinch of that, those folks knew how to use up good food in season, and how to capture summer's glory in Ball jars, and freezers.

I really love to memorize the standard recipes, and then change the ingredients to match what is coming out of our garden. I subsitute zucchini for chard, for red peppers. I roast the red peppers to keep throughout the winter too.

We started a farm a few years ago to grow our own food. Right now we have 3 miniature cows, 50 meat chickens, 10 chickens for eggs, 8 turkey poults, and three hives of bees. We grow vegetables and fruit too.

We've raised hogs in the past, but we're now taking turns doing that with other families. We realized that you can't be self sufficient alone, so we helped to start a collective to grow food together in a large garden and to take turns raising hogs and chickens for meat. We're trying turkeys this year too.

Although our family is trying to be more self sufficient when it comes to food, we kept our day jobs. Bob is a family doctor. Mary is a lobbyist for early childhood programs, and has been a Vermont Public Radio commentator for 12 years. We have three adult and teenage kids, and they all help around the farm.

Our farm is called Bosky Dell Farm, meaning an earthy clearing in the woods. That's what our farm is like. We have 16 acres of mature sugar woods, and 6 of pasture. We planted a small orchard too.
