the root cellar garden is in

Saturday we finished the planting of the root cellar garden. We've planted caribe red, russets, kennebecs, and crescent potatoes. We've also planted yellow onions, shallots, gilfeather turnips, easter egg turnips, parsnips, 3 types of carrots, acorn squash, buttercup squash, butternut squash, gold beets and red beets. On June 7 we'll plant the pumpkin seeds. Nature was good to us this week and it started raining moments after we gathered the tools on Saturday. We had some nice rain for a couple of evenings since.

The collective garden is hard work. People have all kinds of things they have to do on the weekend too. Making time to do the garden is not easy. This week we did the food buying split at Marie and Bob's around the same time we were gardening. That way more of those buying could be there to make the job go faster. It was more fun too. I'd like to do it at Marie and Bob's every Saturday in the summer, if there are amenable. Lots of dirty shoes tromping on that beautiful wood floor though!! I'm going to start carrying indoor shoes and outdoor shoes when I go to other people's houses - like we did in Japan when I taught English at the nursing college.
